Gmail Adds Blue Checkmark to Verified Business Emails to Combat Phishing and Scams

The addition of blue checkmarks to emails has been a hot topic of discussion recently, especially on Twitter and with Elon Musk

Last week, Twitter removed the legacy blue checkmarks from important accounts that didn’t subscribe to Twitter Blue.

However, Twitter is not the only platform with blue checkmarks. Other online platforms, such as YouTube, Pinterest, TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn, also have them.

Meta even followed in Twitter’s footsteps and released a paid blue checkmark program for Facebook and Instagram.

Gmail has now introduced a new feature that is expected to combat phishing and scams. The feature is a blue checkmark that will appear next to every email from a verified business.

This blue checkmark will automatically appear alongside the brand’s icon, which has adopted the Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) feature.

This feature requires email senders to use strong authentication and verify their brand’s logo to display it as an avatar in the email.

If a business has adopted the BIMI feature, the email recipient will see the checkmark icon next to the business name.

Google says this feature is expected to help users recognize messages from legitimate senders and prevent scams.

“Strong email authentication helps users and email security systems identify and stop spam and also allows senders to enhance their brand trust,”

“This increases trust in email sources and provides readers with a deeper experience, creating a better email ecosystem for everyone.

The decision by Gmail to add blue checkmarks to emails comes at a time when blue checkmarks are a hot topic of discussion, especially with Twitter and Elon Musk.
